Featured Interview: "Revisiting the Great Divergence"
Jointly organised by Guangxi Normal University Press Group Co., Ltd. and Guangxi Normal University’s School of History, Culture and Tourism—in collaboration with Fudan University’s Research Centre for Economic History and Economic Thoughts and The University of Hong Kong’s Centre for Quantitative History—the First Lijiang Forum was held from 22–24 June 2026 in Guilin, Guangxi, China.
Centred on the overarching theme of “The Great Divergence and Global History,” the event served as a continuation of this major international scholarly debate. Over 30 experts from 25 domestic and overseas institutions gathered to share cutting-edge research, foster interdisciplinary dialogue, and offer fresh perspectives on historical studies. Discussions were structured around three core modules: “The Great Divergence and China Studies,” “Theories and Methodologies in Chinese Economic History,” and “Big Data and Quantitative History.”
During the event, Fuli Song of Economic Observer, interviewed Professors Stephen Broadberry (Oxford), our advisory board member, and Zhiwu Chen (HKU), our director, for an in-depth exploration of the “Great Divergence” thesis.
